Snow records

I thought I'd share this comment from one of our "readers", and the answer, for those who may not go read all the comments otherwise:

Answer:

I've seen many different "records" recorded for Washington D.C., but the one that seems the most accurate is for 28 inches, set back in 1922. This one blew that away at 32.2 inches (measured at Dulles airport). But in January of 1772, before official records were kept, both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson recorded in their diaries that 36 inches of snow fell in one storm in the capital! That storm is now referred to as the Washington-Jefferson snow storm.

Loving the swow

We got loads of snow, and lots of pictures to share, but our internet connection was down most of the day (snow covered up the antenna on our roof), so they're just getting posted now. We also lost our phone connection, but happily we never lost power throughout the storm, even while houses a half mile from us did. We're thankful for our warm, cozy house!

The sun came out about an hour ago, after 16 hours of snow dumped between 2 and 3 feet in our yard. Schools have already been canceled for Monday and Tuesday -- Jordan is ecstatic, and Jessie is spitting with joy (or is it her teeth?).

Loving the snow

We've got loads of snow, and lots of pictures to share, but our internet
connection just died. We get internet via a wireless RF connection to a
tower on the mountain, but the antenna on our roof is covered in snow and I
finally lost the signal a few minutes ago.

We also lost phone service, but are grateful to still have electricity even
though a few houses down haven't had power since yesterday.

The snow is beautiful and still coming down, after 15 hours. We just got
notified that schools are canceled for Monday and Tuesday, so Jordan will
be ecstatic when he comes down from his nap in a few minutes. He's been
nursing a cold for the past week but is mostly over it now, and ready to
get out and play!

I'm posting this by email via my BackBerry, but I hope to get some pictures
up as soon as we get full internet capability again.

Black and white world

Wednesday morning we woke to a black and white world (this is what the world must have looked like before the 1950's, when color was invented by Eastman Kodak).

Ushering in a new era: the mobile Jessie!

Uh oh! As of yesterday, Jessie is officially mobile! We haven't managed to get many pictures of her yet because she always stops to pose when she sees a camera, but she's been trying to coordinate all four limbs for about a week, and on Tuesday had her first success. She managed to get them all under her simultaneously, followed by a pitch forward that caught her by surprise. Since then, her brain has been analyzing the results of that first foray as well as subsequent attempts, both successful and unsuccessful, which have rapidly developed into a technique to push herself backwards (generally towards the basement stairs!). This is usually accompanied by a sly grin, and followed immediately with an impish smile and a cessation of all motion when she sees that she managed to get a camera to appear.
